The National Institute of Technology (formerly known as Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli, situated in the heart of Tamil Nadu on the banks of river Cauvery, was started as a joint and co-operative venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 with a view to catering to the needs of man-power in technology for the country. Trichy is well connected to various parts of Tamil Nadu, by private and public bus services. The Chathram bus station, near Rock Fort temple, runs local and mofussil (city-to-city) bus services which connect people to nearby towns and villages. Bus services are frequent, once every two to five minutes.
The central bus station runs long distance services to major cities of the State and South India such as Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Erode, Thiruvananthapuram and Tirupathi. One can get buses from Trichy to almost any part of the state, due to its geographical location in the center of Tamil Nadu.
Most of us reach the campus, by boarding bus from the Central Bus Station (CBS), Trichy. Most buses on way to Tanjore do stop at NIT, Trichy. But please do confirm with the bus staff, if the NIT stop is included in their lists.
The geographical area is vast, and there is enough to explore here. Most essential facilities are available within the campus itself. The SC or Shopping Centre is the main source of essential materials. You have facilities for xeroxes, stationaries etc.
Now there is ‘Gurunath’, where most student essential stuffs are available, from books to chocolates, t-shirts to biscuits, greeting cards to laptop mouse. It is open on all days except sunday, from 10 am to 8 pm. It is located behind the ‘Coral’ hostel.
Then we have the Icy, Juicy and the Snacky for ice-creams, fresh juices and snacks, for a small treat or just for chilling out. There is a branch of SBI and two SBI ATM’s within the campus. There is also a Post Office and Courier Service within the campus. It is a mini township on the whole.
HOSTELS and MESS
The fourteen hostels are:

Out of this, 3 hostels is expected to be available for first years. The three hostels are Agate, Coral and Diamond. Diamond was a 2nd year’s hostel previously. There will most probably three in a room and shall be mostly mixed up, thought you can later change room or room-mates, with the consent of the warden. Each of the hostels have a mess adjacent to it.
Sometimes there are power cuts and unavailability of water in the hostels. So, make sure you bring your emergency lamps and candles. The amenities at the hostels are fine and satisfactory.
The facilities not available are Air Conditioning and Computer/Internet facilities within the Hostel. But we do have an Internet Lab.

NIT-T follows semester pattern, i.e. an year is divided into two academic semesters, which have a final semester exam at their climax. All this can be bought from within the campus, from the shops or there shall be second hand sales by seniors.
And no need to worry about the purchasing of books. You can approach your seniors, or can also get second hand or even new books from Chatram, which is about an hour away from the college. There are umpteen book stalls, to choose books from.
For first years the Lecture Hall Complex shall be the venue for all classes. You also have to join either the National Cadets Corps(NCC), National Service Scheme(NSS) or the National Sports Organization (NSO).
Clubs and Associations.
Student Life at NIT-T is not all about studies and games. To spice up life, there are clubs, that encourage co-curricular activities, interaction parties, movies and many more attractions to chill up your evenings. There will be inductions for most clubs in the first semester itself, and seniors shall brief you about the club and how to be a part of it. […] Check out the NIT, Trichy page in my blog. I am a junior student (Third Year from July 2009) at National Institute of Technology, Trichy. I remember to have searched about “NIT Trichy” in Google after my All India Entrance Examination (AIEEE), and I don’t remember to have obtained ‘good’ results with information I wanted to know. So the next thing I did was to write a page in my old blog Novice Investigator. […]
